  • Ed Buffman “Sculptor/Furniture Maker”

I have always understood the world through my five senses more so than through the written word. I see my life and work process as a combination of planning and discovery, a constantly evolving pathway. My sculpture is a manifestation of that way of thinking, through light, line, texture and emotion. I find that sculpting with wood is an ongoing conversation, the wood invites and at times dissuades and redirects my manipulations.

The furniture that I create joins the desired functionality with the energy and discovery of my sculptural work.

My Process

I approach each piece with the vision or thought of a single line in space. Once I initiate that first line, the piece evolves with some planning and a good amount of discovery. There are times when I start a piece, walk away for some time and then come back to it. As I work with the wood there is a sense of finding what is there. The grain, texture and variance in color influence me. Once I have the rough shape I then start to create the textures that really define that particular form and emotion. I utilize the naturally occurring textures in confluence with the ones that are created through my manipulations of the various surfaces.

With furniture, clearly defined functionality comes before form, once this is decided the emergence of form and function harmony can be achieved.

These are two very different paths to be sure and I embrace both with equal passion and wonder.  www.edbuffmansculptor.com

  • Billy Capozzoli is a sculptor whose work explores themes of industrial design, architecture and deconstructivism. Born in Camden Nj, he is currently residing in Bensalem PA.

Choosing to forgo the traditional avenues of art education and instead taking the path of the craftsman apprentice, he began as a ship fitter and welder at the Philadelphia Naval shipyard. His skills in design and fabrication are self taught. He has since worked for many years in the art department and architectural feature industry. A designer of staircases and railings; functional art as he puts it, his works are featured in magnificent homes and buildings throughout the USA.

His sculptures are inspired by the arts and crafts movement. Working by combining various materials such as metal, wood and found objects, using old skills, he attempts to create something new and interesting that explores the question of what is art?

“I work with my hands, I am a designer, a maker, and I like to think of myself as a craftsman. I never liked calling myself an artist. That is a compliment I like hearing from others. Artist isn’t my title, it is my aspiration.”
